Dr. Robert Frakes
Dean of Arts & Humanities
A fourth-generation Southern Californian, Bob Frakes has served as Dean of the School of Arts & Humanities at California State University, Bakersfield, since 2017. For 26 years before coming to CSUB, Dr. Frakes was Professor of History at Clarion University in Pennsylvania (and Department Chair of History for ten years and then Chair of Social Sciences for three years). He has published six books and conducted research at the Leopold Wenger Institute for Ancient Legal History and Papyrus Research at the University of Munich as an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow. He holds a B.A. in Classical Studies from Stanford University, a M.A. in Education from Stanford (as well as two teaching credentials), and the degrees of M.A. and Ph.D. in History (with a specialty in ancient history) at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Dean Frakes is passionate about the importance of the Liberal Arts in Undergraduate Education and impressed by the benefits of high impact practices like Undergraduate Research on student success. He is dedicated to the role of public universities in serving the state and the community.
