Hi everyone! My name is Chris Tang and I am a historian of Modern China, focusing on China during the twentieth century and especially the history of the People’s Republic (1949-present). My research explores propaganda and political mobilization in China’s 1960s, tracing how Chinese depictions of events from around the world helped to inspire people to participate in the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) at home.
I am originally from Canada, where I completed my B.A. and M.A. at McGill University in Montreal. I then lived in China for a few years, before I returned to pursue my Ph.D. at Cornell University in upstate New York. At CSUB, I will be teaching courses in Chinese History and World History, and sometime soon specialized courses on the Cold War and on propaganda.
After far too many years in cold weather locations, I’m thrilled to be here in sunny California and look forward to making it my new home!
