Dr. Lena Taub Robles spoke at the CSUB Faculty Day about her participation at the event " Marie Chauvet/Haiti: Chauvet’s Theatres of Revolt," held at CUNY's Martin Segal Theatre Center in October 2016 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Haitian author Marie Vieux Chauvet. Born in Haiti in 1916, Chauvet was forced into exile during the Duvalier dictatorship and her family chose to remove all her work from the public. She continued to write in exile, but Chauvet's work remained inaccessible for many years.
Chauvet's work has garnered much critical attention in recent years and much of her novels and theatre have been republished. Benin-born playwright Jose Pliya adapted Chauvet's novel Amour, Colère et Folie for the theatre and Lena translated the play "Amour," which was represented at the centenary celebration. Lena is also co-editing a critical volume following the event, entitled Marie Vieux Chauvet’s Theatres of Revolt: Action, Aesthetics, and Adaptation.
News from the Philosophy department!
Dr. Nate Olson tells us......"I’ll be taking CSUB’s Ethics Bowl team to the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi on Monday (Nov. 13) to debate a group of inmates there. The CSUB team is composed of six different students who are all taking my class PHIL 3610: Ethics Bowl. We’ll be debating a couple of contemporary ethics issues: euthanasia and whether mental health professionals should be able to comment on the mental health status of public figures.
In a few weeks, the students and I will also be traveling to the California Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Competition in San Diego. (The competition is on Dec. 2.) There, we will debate teams from other universities. Support for both of these trips comes from the School of Arts and Humanities, the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center, and the Kegley Institute of Ethics."
