From February 15 through 17, 2018, 29 CSUB Music majors and two Music faculty attended the California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC) in San José, California. CASMEC is an annual music educators conference organized through a collaboration between the California Music Educators Association (CMEA), the California Band Directors Association (CBDA), the California Choral Directors Association (CCDA), the California Orchestra Directors Association (CODA), and the California Alliance for Jazz (CAJ). CSUB faculty members Dr. Leo Sakomoto and Dr. Angel Vazquez-Rámos both led separate, acclaimed sessions attended by primary and secondary music educators, collegiate students, and arts administrators.
Educators and professionals across the country submit proposals to present at CASMEC on an annual basis, and it is an honor to be chosen. Dr. Vazquez-Rámos also co-coordinated the Choral Leadership Academy (a two-day workshop for select collegiate choral music students), and Dr. Sakomoto moderated a panel meeting for members of CMEA in university/college teaching positions.
CSUB’s Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for Music Education hosted a dinner for current and past students during the conference. Forty-seven students and alumni attended the dinner, allowing current students to network with educators from Bakersfield and surrounding areas, as well as celebrating the tradition of excellence of CSUB. In addition to fostering professional development for its students and faculty, the CSUB Music Program looks forward to continue growing its program through community service, collaboration with local, state, and regional music organizations, and alumni engagement.
